He has 12 + years of experience with dogs, which had always been centred around the import and breeding German Shepherds, as well as training dogs for police and military work. His training abilities in the areas of protection, scent identification and tracking, are complimented by numerous certifications and hands on work with local, national and international police forces. He has also been active in the world of Schutzhund, having previously run his own training club, north of Toronto. There have never been any couch potatoes in his house and no one dared to try sleeping on his bed!
She on the other hand had always been the proverbial “pet mom”, having brought home her first German Shepherd in 1995 and then the two boys in 1997. Everyone had their own cushy pillow bed, and they all led a spoiled, fun and non-demanding life. They had full run of the house, got to go to “doggie camp” and correction matches, play in their own baby pool, and generally just hang out. We tried agility, flyball and tracking just for the fun of it. And yes, they each had their own favourite piece of furniture, and the oldest
always slept with mom until she passed suddenly in February 2003.
For years, we had each separately journeyed down the vastly different forks of the dog world road, knowing some of the same people, but never actually crossing paths. When we met in late 2004, our experiences and philosophies about training, raising and living with our dogs were almost diametrically opposed. What we very quickly realized however, was that we each had the same primary focus in our lives - and that was to ensure that all of our dogs, past, present and future, were provided healthy, stimulating and quality lives with us.
He had extensively researched the traditional "kibble" diets when he was breeding, and had learned of the common use of BHT, BHA and Ethoxyquin as “preservatives” . What he also learned was, that these man-made chemicals have been shown to cause liver and kidney damage, and have been linked to birth defects in the offspring of mothers who ingest it. Disgusted with the options available in North America, he began importing food from Europe, where the inclusion of these chemicals had been banned.
She had always tried to buy "the best" dry and canned food out there for her brood, but since her guy had been diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, (insufficient enzymes in the upper gastric tract, which is where food is broken down into useable components), she had been struggling to find the right balance of enzyme supplimentation and a food that would keep his weight up and that he wouldn't turn his nose at.
In 2005, after extensive research, we both switched our dogs from the kibble they were on, to a raw diet (at that time, we were buying from the "competition"). We immediately saw some dramatic improvement in his Austrian Shepherd/Malinois cross. This is a very driven, high energy dog, specifically bred for police work. His chest and shoulders became more muscular, his coat more shiny and his colour deeper, his "doggy smell" was gone, the tartar on his teeth disappeared and he suddenly became very impatient for meals to be served, whereas before going Raw, he had been quite picky and not particularly thrilled by what was placed in front of him.
My guy also did quite well on the Raw food. He put on weight, his previously dry, dull coat and dandruff disappeared and became soft, shiny and much deeper in tone. I was able to slowly reduce the amount of enzyme supplimentation which had to be added to every meal, to about half what he had needed to digest the previous kibble diet.
Our venture into creating our own Raw food diet started in mid - 2006, when we began to notice that both of our dogs were again becoming picky eaters and my guy was unable to maintain his weight, despite being fed 3lbs of food a day. We attributed these changes in our dogs to a noticeable reduction in the quality of the food we were buying. Even though it was suppose to be the same product, it seemed to be much thinner on meat and much higher in water content than it had been originally.
Unhappy and disappointed with the quality decline in this food, we began consulting with a local holistic veterinarian. She provided us with guidance and suggestions for the optimal diet combination. We then sought out the highest quality local sources for protein vegetables and fruits, and began making food for our own dogs and for those of a few friends.
We noticed one thing immediately, our food was much denser in consistency than what we had previously been buying, and was much more enticing to our dogs. My guy began putting on weight again, the enzyme supplimentation was reduced to 1/8th of the previous dosage and we didn't have any difficulty getting either dog to eat. We had obviously found the optimal combination...and the proof was in our dogs!
What was additionally gratifying to us, was that our friends started to tell us that their previously lethargic Labroador suddently developed enourmous energy, and the GSD who previously couldn't climb the stairs was now running and playing with her companions.
For those of you who are new to the concept of feeding a Raw diet, you may be skeptical and feel that there had to be something more done to help these dogs other than simply switching from "mass produced name brand" to Raw.
We understand your skepticism, since we were once skeptics ourselves, but we encourage you to read through our website, and the numerous other websites out there that advocate the Raw food diet. We encourage you to do your own research, open your minds and your hearts to the logic and common-sense of feeding a Raw diet to a carnivorous species.
We promise you that once you make the switch to Raw, you will see the results and you will never go back.
We now bring these ancestrally evolved foods to you, so your dogs can begin enjoying a healthy, natural diet of whole raw protiens, vegetables and fruits, as it was always meant to be....designed by Mother Nature herself.
