Breed Specific Legislation

First and foremost, we DO NOT SUPPORT any legislation which attempts to ban, prohibit or single out any specific breed of dog. Recently we saw a bumper sticker that stated it very well.... "Punish the Deed NOT the Breed!"

Breed banning is another ill-conceived band-aid fix, a bone (if you will) thrown to the public by a bunch of politicians who want to "appear" to be doing something about something. It allows them to divert your attention from the huge raise they just gave themselves or the tax payer money they wasted on photo-ops and remodelling their offices, or the fact that they will have to raise taxes and cut services yet again, while keeping themselves wallowing in their perks.

Legislating a blanket ban on any breed of dog, for the actions and behaviours of a selected few, is NOT the solution to the why's and how's of  isolated (and highly publicized) dog bite incidents.  Any breed of dog can cause significant damage to a human being. A chihuahua can scar a baby just as fast and just as seriously as any larger breed, given the correct set of  circumstances, individual history, past treatment, conditioning and triggers.

We are each responsible for the socialization, conditioning and basic training of our dogs. We are each responsible for the circumstances that we allow our dogs to find themselves in. We are each responsible to use proper common-sense and our (supposed) higher intelligence, to foresee, predict and forecast the potential for our dogs to be placed in new, stressful or unusual circumstances, circumstances which could potentially lead to an unwanted outcome. There are very simple and easy methods of ensuring that these types of circumstances are not permitted to turn into a tragic headline. In almost all cases, it could have been prevented. If the human part of the equation were to use forethought and common sense to take simple and preventative measures, there would be no headlines, there would be no breed bans.
