Our society in general, has been conditioned to believe that the relief or treatment of a symptom is synonymous to the resolution or cure of the illness. What we have lost however, is the innate knowledge that the symptoms are just the final external expression of a broader and deeper problem.

By simply treating a symptom, you may be able to alleviate the immediate and more noticeable difficulty, however, if you fail to seek out the underlying cause, the reason the symptoms arose in the first place, then you will never resolve the genuine root of the problem, the symptoms return and the cycle repeats itself.

Unfortunately, the majority of medical professionals, both human and veterinary have be educated in the “westernized” methods of drugs and surgery. The patient is viewed only as the disease or body part which is causing the immediate concern – the patient is not evaluated as a whole being of complex, multifaceted and inter-related physical and emotional levels.

Fortunately for your dog, there are an increasing number of healing art practitioners available to you, who are educated in a diverse range of methodologies which take a Holistic Approach to the care, support and on-going well-being of your most trusted friends.

The first step in the Holistic Approach is the awakening of your own mind to the possibility that there is an alternative way of caring for your dog. The fact that you are here, means you have taken that step.

The second step is realizing that the basis of your dog’s good health starts with the food which you provide for him. Raw Food provides your dog with the appropriate proteins, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and natural energy to build and maintain a strong immune system. Raw Food does not require excessive energy to be expended by the body in order to digest grains, chemicals or super-heated animal by-products which are void of all any inherent nutritional substance.

We don’t pretend to be experts in any of the Healing Art methodologies listed below, but we strongly believe that seeking out practitioners who can provide your dog with a calm, reassuring, caring treatment environment and a variety of options for the support and balancing of their own powers of healing can provide you and your dog with a long, healthy and enjoyable life together.

Acupressure

A healing art based on the fundamentals of Chinese medicine in which finger pressure is applied to specific sensitive points on the body.

Acupuncture

This is a traditional Chinese technique and a drugless method of health care that treats a broad range of illness and pain. When an animal is healthy, there is a free circulation of energy, ("chi"), that travels throughout the body along channels known as meridians. Acupuncture points are specific zones along these meridians, and the centre of each zone is considered to be the area of greatest activity of the "chi" or life force energy.

Illness is described as a blockage or an imbalance of a meridian disrupting the overall health and disturbing normal function. An illness is treated by stimulating the acupuncture points with the use of thin sterile needles. This manipulates the channels of energy into balance and allows the body to begin the process resuming normal health.

Aromatherapy

Therapy based on the use of very concentrated "essential" oils from the flowers, leaves, bark, branches, rind or roots of plants with purported healing properties. These potent oils are mixed with a carrier (usually soybean or almond oil) or the oils are diluted with alcohol or water and rubbed on the skin, sprayed in the air, inhaled or applied as a compress. They are not intended for consumption.

It is believed that the aroma of these "essential" oils directly stimulate the brain or that the oils are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, where they can affect the whole body and promote healing.

Bach Flower Therapy

Bach Flower Remedies were developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930's. Each of the 38 remedies is relative to a specific state of mind and taken from a different non-poisonous flower. Bach Flower remedies are used as a natural method of establishing emotional balance in animals. Animals are known to have feelings such as fear and loneliness; they can experience stress and react to changes in their environment.

Chiropractic
The drugless practice of chiropractic is the assessment of conditions related to the spine, nervous system and joints and the diagnosis, prevention and treatment, primarily by adjustment, of,

i) dysfunctions or disorders arising from the structures or functions of the spine and the effects of those dysfunctions or disorders on the nervous system; and

ii) dysfunctions or disorders arising from the structures or functions of the joints

Computerized Elctro-Dermal Screening

CEDS measures the electrical resistance of the body's organs and tissues by applying a low-level electrical stimulus to acupuncture points. It is a method of energetically determining sensitivities and imbalances. Information regarding the foundation of a pet's health is provided and a protocol for improvement is developed.

CEDS can be used to screen the function of all the body's systems and organs for:

i) Organ stress and toxicity
ii) Sensitivities to certain foods
iii) Which nutritional or homeopathic remedy and the exact potency that will bring about an energy balance
iv) Sensitivity or a weakness to heavy metals, toxic products and pollutants, such as pesticides and herbicides
v)  Potential mineral deficiencies

Hair Tissue Analysis

Hair permanently records past events of a pet's mineral and metal status. As hair grows, it takes protein from the blood and in the process concentrates nutrient and toxic elements into the hair shaft. Research indicates that many elements in the hair reflect mineral stores better than any other medium. Hair Tissue Analysis measures toxic metal build-up, the pet's emotional state and nutritional status. It is also an indicator of chronic diseases and a diagnostic tool for assessing degrees of patient wellness. There are twenty nutritional minerals and nine toxic metals which are routinely analyzed.

Herbal Remedies

The use of specific herbs and plants for medicinal purposes has been practiced for millions of years. Herbal medicine includes North American herbs, Aryuvedic herbs from India, traditional Chinese herbs, and other botanicals from all over the world. Herbs have healing powers that are capable of balancing the emotional, mental and physical dimensions of animals.

Homeopathy

Developed by Samuel Hahnemann towards the end of the 18th century, based on the understanding that healing comes from within, from the body’s innate self-healing forces. These forces are to be stimulated by certain substances that if administered in large doses, to a healthy animal, will produce specific symptoms, but when the same substance is administered in very minute doses, it will stimulate the body to fight off the symptoms. This is called the Law of Similars.

The patient's own defenses, properly stimulated, are usually sufficient to bring the patient back into balance, thus eliminating the disease. The remedies are used to stimulate the whole patient to heal, not to alter the body chemistry as with conventional medicines. These remedies rarely produce unwanted or uncomfortable side effects.

Laser Therapy

A Laser is an amplification of light caused by a stimulated emission of radiation. It is produced by photo stimulation of a laser medium such as helium neon argon or ruby or by directed electrical loading of a solid state diode. Laser therapy is used to reduce inflammation and to increase immune response for tissue regeneration and pain relief.

This is a safe, harmless yet effective treatment for skin, bone and joint problems, and is also used for acupuncture therapy. Laser light appears to stimulate acupuncture points like a needle does. It is most useful on the acupuncture points that are too sensitive to needles. Laser therapy employs a "soft" laser beam to produce biological stimulation of tissue.

Reiki

Reiki, a Japanese word meaning "Universal Life-Force-Energy", was discovered by Dr. Usui, in the late 1800's. It is the process of channeling intensified life force energy through the hands onto the body by way of the body's energy centres. This life force energy can promote healing on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki has the potential to relieve pain and speed the healing process while working to maintain a balance within the body

Tellington Touch

This technique developed by Linda Tellington-Jones in 1983 is a "hands-on" method based on circular movements of the fingers and hands over an animal's body. Activation of the function of the cells helps speed up the healing of injuries or ailments or changing undesirable habits or behaviour.

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine

TCVM focuses on health maintenance, illness prevention and non-invasive treatment through its four branches:

i) Acupuncture;
ii) Chinese botanicals/herbs
iii) Nutritional therapy
iv) Massage therapy.
